Personal EV Available at Best Buy

Segways have finally debuted in the main stream, they are now available in two flavors through 10 select Best Buys across California (and are available to be shipped nation wide to local Best Buy's by calling one of the participating stores - our store can be reached at (650) 903-0591 extension 3). For $5,300 you get the standard, smooth tired version made for roads and sidewalks. For an extra $400 you can upgrade to the off-road version with larger tires, wider track, and more aggressive tread. According to store reps both versions are "water proof" but we'll on the side of caution and say they look more water resistant than anything. An in store video shows the personal electric vehicles being ridden off road on what look like mountain biking trails and along a beach through the shallow shore break... We're thinking that could definitely rust the segway, but hey what's $5,300 when you're having fun at the beach?

The Segway has seen many forms (and names) over the past several years but it began it's public courtship on December 3rd 2001 with a demo on the popular morning TV show Good Morning America. It was invented by a gentleman named Dean Kaman who is known for such other innovations as Stirling engine designs, water purifiers, the AutoSyringe, and a wheelchair that can climb stairs called iBOT - which lends much of it's balancing technology to the Segway.

The word segway itself is Italian for "transition" which is exactly what it seems to be doing as it is adapted for police officers, security guards, handicapped people, a rich man's version of polo, and finally the main stream average joe six pack and Best Buy. To us the price seems a bit excessive but considering you save a lot on gas it could make sense for people who do a lot of in-town driving. Over the past seven years we've seen the Segway PT (personal transporter) and Segway HT (human transporter) and the newest one at Best Buy is called the Segway i2 and x2 with the x2 being the off road version. One of our friends out here in the Bay Area actually built his own Segway for ~$1,500 and let us take it for a ride at the Bay Area EV Convention a few months ago as shown in the video below.
